UK Healthcare Estate
In December 2015 Douglas Blausten organised and chaired a major Lecture given by Professor Chris Ham CBE, Chief Executive of The Kings Fund on the Future of the NHS (see Articles and Publications – “What needs to be done to secure the future of the NHS” – The Fourth Whitehall Lecture). Following this he was asked by the then Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Health to assist him and others in engaging with the private sector to discuss the opportunities and structures for the NHS estate to joint venture for investment and structure a disposals strategy of surplus, ‘not fit for purpose’ and underused properties. Throughout 2016 using an independent forum over 40 members of the private finance sector, investment funds, housing associations, publicly quoted companies and other entities were engaged in discussions on how to structure such strategies, in part creating an ‘insourcing’ of skills, as an important element of the strategy and private sector contribution to joint ventures. These meetings were centred around several briefing papers to enable focused and informed discussions.
